Why am I missing certain DVB channels? The picture is black with the pop-up ’No signal’ or there is sometimes break-up of the picture and sound distortion.

The picture breaks up, the sound distorts, or even the screen goes black and ’No signal’ appears. Check with the TDF web-site that your town is covered for good DVB reception : TDF ’ma TNT’, and follow the instructions. If you use an indoor antenna you must be within 10 miles of the transmitter (more or less according to the terrain). Bad analog reception shows up on the TV as ’snow’ (random white and black dots …) and sometimes a ’ghost’ image. With digital reception (TNT in France) the quality is more important than the signal strength. In fact, either you have a perfect image or nothing at all. If you have no signal or break up in the picture you have a problem with your reception. A change in the weather can also induce such picture break up or even a black screen with ’No signal’ appearing.

Aerial installations which were optimized for certain analog channels with filters and amplifiers may well prevent you receiving the new digital channels. Filters are used to eliminate ’ghost’ images and noise, and may well attenuate or even eliminate the digital signals.

You should try your Premio on another aerial at the home of someone who receives the digital channels well, (at the neighbours’, a friends house or the TV shop). Otherwise call up a professional aerial installer to fix up your aerial system for digital reception. You should also check the following points :
• The aerial direction.
• The aerial should be adapted to the frequencies of the digital broadcasts in your area, preferably with a wide bandwidth; use a high gain aerial (15dB => 15 director elements and a good reflector), unless you are within 5 miles of the transmitter. The polarization of French digital broadcasts is horizontal.
• Take off any RF filters which may be present.
• If you have an aerial RF amp, it should not be selective, but rather wide bandwidth to amplify all the channels broadcast.
• The aerial cable should be good quality with good connections everywhere to prevent signal loss.
• Use proper aerial distribution boxes with matched impedance. The old aerial plugs were 9 mm diameter. The official plug diameter for ten years now is 9.52 mm. Check your plugs and sockets.
• If you have a signal echo you should re-orientate your aerial a little or install anti-echo deflector screens..
